Directions for creating an APA style Running Header in Word:

  1. Double-click at the top of the page to make header appear

  2. In the Design tab, check box that says Different First Page

  3. Click button that says Page Number

  4. Select Top of Page then Plain Number 1

  5. Type your running header in front of the page number (i.e. Running head: SAMPLE FOR STUDENTS)

  6. After typing title, hit the TAB key to move the page number to the right margin

  7. Click outside of the header and go to the second page of the document

  8. Double-click at the top of the page to make header appear again

  9. Click on button that says Page Number

  10. Select Top of Page then Plain Number 1

  11. Type the title only this time, without "Running head" (i.e. SAMPLE FOR STUDENTS)

  12. After typing the title, hit the TAB key to move the page number to the right margin (it should say Page 2 this time)

  13. Click outside of the header and view remaining pages of document to verify that the header is different from the first page and that pages are all in proper numerical order
