Using the Library Catalog to Find Books & E-Books

Library Catalog
  • Search one or two keywords for best search results. Keep your keyword terms broad!
  • To limit the catalog to books, click on the "Modify Search" link and limit by Material Type by selecting "Books" from the drop-down menu.

Searching for Journal Articles

Recommended Databases:
  • URsearch
    • All-in-one search tool that searches 200+ Ursuline databases.
    • Limit to Full Text + Academic Journals + set the language to English after entering your search terms.

  • Art & Architecture Complete - Full-text database for articles in art and architecture with over 63,000 images.
  • Art Full Text - Index and abstracts for articles in art.
  • Artstor - A digital library of more than one million images in the arts, architecture, humanities, and social sciences.
    • Downloading images from Artstor & Inserting Images into Word or PowerPoint:
      1. Register with Artstor by creating a username and password. It is required for downloading images.
      2. On search results page, double click on the image to enlarge it. Click on the disc icon to download the image.
      3. Click on View Downloads in the pop up window.
      4. Open the file. There will be two files for each image. The jpeg file is the image. The html file is the description.
      5. From the folder list you can right click on the jpeg file then copy and paste it into your document (Word or PowerPoint)

Database Search Tips:
  • Search one or two keywords for best search results.
    • Use Firefox or Chrome to get the drop-down box under the search bar for keyword suggestions.

  • Think about RELEVANCE
  • Boolean Searching: Combine search terms and concepts using AND/OR
    • Use OR to broaden your search to include synonyms and related terms (ex: painting OR watercolor)
    • Use AND to narrow your search by combining concepts
    • Truncation: Use an asterisk * to find word variants (ex: art* = arts, artist, artists, artistic, etc.)

  • How to find the FULL-TEXT:
    • Click on the PDF Full Text link or the Find It! button to look for the full-text in another database.
    • No PDF or Find It! link? Try searching for the journal title in Journal Finder or see if the article is freely available online.
    • If you still can't find the full-text, you can submit an Article Request form. Please note it may take several days to process your article request!
