AT 101: Introduction to Art Therapy

The library's art therapy collection is extensive. Use this website as your quick guide.

General Overview

URSearch: This giant database is perfect for searching broad topics, and covers all types of sources. To be used only when initially researching a topic!

Books

Library Catalog: keyword searches on art therapy theorists and art therapy theory in general.

Finding Articles

PsycINFO indexes all aspects of psychological literature. There is a second database for historical publications.

These databases will overlap with art therapy:
CINAHL Plus with Full Text covers art therapy articles published in the nursing literature.
ERIC will identify articles in the education literature. It is particularly helpful if your topic involves art education.
MEDLINE with full text (EBSCO) indexes the medical literature. Use it for art therapy articles appearing in the medical literature as well as for medical information.
Social Work Abstracts is particularly useful for its coverage of counseling literature.
AltHealthWatch covers complimentary, holistic and integrated approaches to health care and wellness.

Popular vs. Scholarly Articles

For the purposes of your paper, you will want to limit your search results to only include scholarly articles. To do this, access the limiters in your database by navigating to Advanced Search or to the options on the left side of the page. Make sure to select Academic Journals in Source Type or Peer-Reviewed Journals in Publication Type to limit your results to scholarly sources.

When browsing your results, you will be looking for article records that have the Academic Journal icon.

If the Article Isn't Online

If we have the article in print and you are not on campus, you can request that a copy be e-mailed to you. We can also obtain articles from other libraries. To request these articles, go to our Article Request site.

Plagiarism

Most people understand plagiarism as copying someone else's work or passing someone else's work off as your own. This can involve completely copying someone else's paper, to lifting individual lines of text, to not correctly citing ideas that are not your own. ALWAYS properly cite information in your papers and ALWAYS paraphrase when discussing the work and ideas of others.
